Repro is an abbreviation of reproduction (Latin for duplication) and is used in very different ways. Repro can mean the entire prepress process, but also be restricted to the template production for the printing form, or individual work steps such as colour separation. The objective of reproduction is to implement the parameters of the design concept, the artwork and the brand identity while taking account of the characteristics of the material, format, printing parameter etc. where possible 1:1 in a printable format. The repro process converts a universal, printing technically neutral artwork into a process or printer specific printing copy. This includes things such as colour separation, special colour channels, exposure spreading, use of the colour profile etc. While a standard repro is still relatively abstract, a printer-specific repro only offers little margin for deviations during production printing.
