Chromium Trioxide

The role of chromium Trioxide in the manufacture of printing cylinders

Chromium trioxide, or chromium(VI), plays a vital role in the chrome-plating of printing and embossing cylinders. Cylinders are generally chrome-plated after imaging to increase their resilience and durability.

Internal processes at Janoschka relating to chromium take place in a closed-loop environment, with no touchpoints to the outside world. In addition, the finished product is completely harmless in its metallic chrome state.

In 2013, chromium trioxide (chromium(VI) oxide) was added to the authorisation list of the European Union’s REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation of Chemicals) regulation, due to its hazardous material properties. At the end of 2020, the European Union Commission gave its conditional authorisation for chromium trio-xide for gravure printing applications, valid until Sep-tember 2024.

All Janoschka production sites within the EU are registered with the European Union as downstream users according to regulati-ons and hold the necessary authorisation for the continued use of chromium(VI) oxide. The mandatory monitoring programmes for downstream users in terms of workplace protection and risk management are being implemented and documented accordingly.

Further questions will be answered by the Operations Excellence Team.
